These days I find myself asking my husband or friends: "Could what I said be taken as harmful or unkind?" Sometimes we must reflect on how we speak to others. Was it hurtful? Did we withhold attention? Were our thoughts toward them less than gracious?

We often focus on wrongs done to us, but what about the wrongs we do to others? You may have been the person who caused someone else to feel bitter and hold a grudge.

We have all hurt someone, and it is part of our human experience. When we offend, the wounded person often tries to hurt back. This creates a painful cycle unless someone chooses to break it through forgiveness.

Scripture shows us the way forward: "For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15, ESV).

When we remember our own need for forgiveness, it becomes easier to extend mercy to others. Recognizing how often we fall short helps grace flow more freely from our hearts.

What would change in your relationships if you examined your own heart before you examined theirs?
