What is gratitude? Everyone speaks about it during this time of Thanksgiving, but what is gratitude? The dictionary defines it as "the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness." Additionally, when you search its meaning online, it says "In the Bible, gratitude is a humble acknowledgment of God as the source of all good things, involving thankfulness, praise, and a willingness to give to others. It is not limited to good times but is a constant state of being, even during hardship, as exemplified by figures like Job and the Apostle Paul."
Looking at the last part about "during hardship," we see that when we do not have gratitude in our hearts during those difficult times, it becomes hard to be thankful. When you carry unforgiveness, it can be even harder to find gratitude.
But remember the hardships and how you got through them with faith and belief in Jesus Christ. You can get through it all, and gratitude will flow. When you spend time in the Bible, it makes you reflect on your own life and what God has brought you through. Recently, I saw a movie called "Finding Faith" that made me think about what I can forgive or show gratitude for.
Read about Job in the Bible and think about what he endured. Then reflect on how you have survived through your own trials. As we come to Thanksgiving, be thankful for what Jesus went through for us. In 2025, be grateful for the ability to get through it all.
Remember this truth: "And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends." (Job 42:10, ESV) and in the end "And after this Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, four generations. And Job died, an old man, and full of days." (Job 42:16-17, ESV)
I will not send out a newsletter next Friday, but have a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving. I will be back the following week after Thanksgiving.
Think about this: What if your hardship could lead to gratitude and unlock the forgiveness you need to give?
