I met someone recently, and they did not appear very friendly. They seemed like they did not want to be bothered. I thought to myself, well, maybe they are just indifferent, and that is how they always are. But then I saw them the next day, and they waved and smiled at me warmly.
How interesting that we so often focus on our own feelings rather than consider what the other person might be going through. Perhaps they had a difficult day, and it truly was not about me or my presence at all. When someone slights us, our first instinct is to place the blame on them. But what if we paused to think differently?
What would happen if we took a moment to wonder about how their day was going? Perhaps something happened that completely upset their day. When you choose to forgive yourself for your quick assumption, you take responsibility. You realize you did not need to blame them but rather examine your own reaction and understanding.
When I reflect on this verse about David, it reminds me of how deeply God knows me, what I think, and what I say:
"O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether." (Psalm 139:1-4, ESV)
What if your quick judgment reveals more about your heart than theirs?
