Dear Yvette,
Bitterness. Rage. Resentment. Anger. These words describe unforgiveness. They live inside you, heavier with each passing day. But what if there is a way to set them all down at once?
What is Forgiveness?
The Bible offers clear guidance: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32, ESV).
Considering the verse before this one: "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice" (Ephesians 4:31, ESV).
Bitterness is deepening resentment. Wrath builds rage inside you. Anger simmers as hostility. Clamor creates strife. Slander wounds through unkind words. Malice carries ill will toward another.
God forgives us completely. So should we forgive others, even for small things. Read Matthew 18:21-35 to understand this more deeply.
People hurt us through words and actions. Yet do we internalize these hurts and create cycles of bitterness? We ourselves are not perfect. We say wrong words. We take wrong actions.
So why should we not forgive them as we hope to be forgiven?
What if you misunderstood that person? What if they are facing a difficult day? Things happen to people we know nothing about.
Be kind and tenderhearted. Forgive from your heart because you may need forgiveness too.
What grudge could transform into grace if you chose to understand instead of judge?
