Dear Yvette,

She survived mental abuse. Gaslighting. Manipulation. For years, she could not be near her mother without pain. But she found something remarkable: she could forgive without reconciling. And that changed everything.

Someone shared with me about the situations she went through while growing up with her mother. She described experiencing mental abuse, gaslighting, and manipulation. As an adult, she experienced anxiety whenever she needed to be in her mother's company. Over the years, she found it difficult to spend time with her mother.

But throughout all of this, she explained that she was able to forgive her mother. However, she indicated she could not reconcile with her because reconciliation requires two people.

Forgiveness is about releasing the desire for vengeance and the resentment for what someone has done to you. It does not require reconciliation.

Ephesians 4:32 (ESV) says: "Be kind to one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

Those memories can be harmful, but her faith in God moves her through those painful times. She found that the moments with her mother are now bearable, though often challenging.

Forgiveness freed her. It can free you too.

What weight could you release by forgiving without needing to reconcile?
